New Coders Show Off Projects at Demo Day on July 12

Claim Academy students, many of whom were funded by Facebook, demo their capstone projects during public event after 12 weeks of training. In March, St. Louis-based software developer bootcamp Claim Academy announced its partnership with Facebook, which provided $250,000 in scholarship funds to students who could not afford to attend Claim otherwise.

Students in Claim’s latest Java program, many of whom were awarded the Facebook Scholarship, is set to graduate in just under two weeks. Their training culminates in an event called “Demo Day,” where members of the public and employers seeking entry-level developers gather in Claim’s classroom to watch students demo their capstone projects.

These projects reflect each student’s personal interests or hobbies; Claim believes in giving students the flexibility to build a software application or website that solves a real problem — any problem — they have identified in their work or personal life.

At Demo Day on July 12th, student projects will include, among many others, an app to schedule hair bookings, a software to help us recover from natural disasters, and a supply chain logistics management system.

Claim Academy originally partnered with Facebook because they share a common mission to address the skills gap in technology. The lack of software developers who can write code in the St. Louis region often prevents companies from claiming their stake as members of the growing Midwestern tech innovation hub. Though jobs in technology are abundant, people lack access to basic education in coding and software development. Minority populations are even less likely to gain access to this kind of training.

Thanks to the Facebook grant, Claim Academy admitted 25 new students from diverse backgrounds, including some international students. Facebook covered bootcamp tuition for these 25 students, which is $12,500.

There are two upcoming Demo Days this Summer: one on July 12 and another on August 2nd. For more information and to RSVP, please visit: www.claimacademystl.com/demo-day.php.
