Sparo Labs’ Wing Officially Launches Sales

Sparo Labs, a digital health startup based in Downtown St. Louis, officially launched sales this morning of its flagship product, Wing.

Wing is the first over-the-counter, FDA-cleared smartphone sensor for measuring and tracking lung function. This means anyone can purchase Wing–no prescription necessary–through the Wing website to proactively manage asthma or their respiratory conditions.

Wing gained FDA approval this summer. As of this morning, Wing is available for purchase for $129 at mywing.io and will begin shipping at the end of November.

Wing, the pocket-sized sensor and cloud-connected app created by St. Louis-based Sparo Labs, officially launches sales today.

How it Works

One out of every 12 people in the US suffer from asthma (approximately 25 million people), yet asthma is currently managed reactively as many people struggle to recognize early warning signs of an asthma attack until they are having trouble breathing. Asthma is the #1 condition causing ER visits, hospitalizations and missed school, but almost every asthma attack is preventable. Wing promises to aid in that.

Aimed at parents of children with asthma, Wing is a pocket-sized sensor and cloud-connected app with a simple stoplight zone system that provides the ability to detect early declines in lung function and take action to prevent asthma attacks—even before their child notices any symptoms. Wing alerts you if your child’s lung function has declined into the “Yellow Zone”, which means they should use their quick-relief albuterol inhaler to prevent an oncoming attack.

Parents can use Wing to ensure the medication worked correctly and their child is back in the “Green Zone”, or know when to get more help if needed. With a cloud-based platform, Wing makes it easy for everyone to stay on the same page about the child’s asthma control and care, including family, coaches, the asthma doctor and school nurse.

In addition to asthma, Wing can also help people proactively manage other respiratory conditions, such as COPD and cystic fibrosis.

Led by co-founders Abby Cohen and Andrew Brimer, Sparo Labs raised $450,000 earlier this year and has raised over $2.7 million to date. Founded in the WashU Hatchery class, the company went on to demo the product to President Obama at the first-ever White House Demo Day in 2015.
